Planeloads of tourists on their way to the Costa del Sol resorts go through Malaga airport every day with very few stopping to enjoy the delights of the city itself, and they really are missing a treat. Once considered a poor cousin to Seville, Malaga is now starting to get some well deserved attention with many cultural tourists now flocking to this beautiful city.
Cultural and historic
In 2003 the city opened the now acclaimed Picasso Museum in homage to its most famous son and is now well on the way to making its bid for European Capital of Culture in 2016. Historical sights to explore include a Parador (state run hotel), once a Moorish castle, high on the hill above the city, a Moorish Alcazaba dating back to 1065, and an imposing Baroque cathedral.
Retail therapy
The city centre with its atmospheric streets and squares is also a great place to shop, with boutiques, designer shops and classy cafes all surrounded by beautifully restored buildings. There is no shortage of places to eat and drink, from the ubiquitous tapas bar and beachside chiringuitos (yes this amazing city also boasts its own beach) to Michelin starred restaurants serving up gastronomic delights.
