Set among hills of orange, fig and almond trees with dazzling whitewashed houses, Tavira is one of the most charming towns along the Algarve coast. The town dates back to around 2000BC and also boasts a Moorish Castle, with some splendid views from the ramparts, and some beautiful churches. Visitors cannot fail to be impressed by the number of luminous white facades, spires, domes and bell-towers. Along the coast and on an island opposite the town (easily reached by ferry) are beautiful empty beaches with sands that seem to go on forever.
