Lying in the south eastern corner of the Iberian peninsula, this sun-baked province has the highest hours of sunshine and lowest rainfall in Europe. Almeria has the clearest skies in Europe, and is home to the most powerful telescope in Europe, near the town of Gergal.
A charming city
Located at the foot of a mountain range, the city and port of Almeria is overlooked by a vast, sprawling Moorish citadel, the Alcazaba. From here there is an excellent view of the city’s famed cave quarter and of the fortified Cathedral with its gothic construction and renaissance façade. The old town is worth exploring, with great tapas bars in which to rest between sights.
Unspoilt coastline
Unlike much of the Spanish coastline the Costa Almeria is completely unspoilt. To the east of Almeria lies the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park, popular with nature lovers and back packers. To the west of Almeria are the developed tourist resorts of Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce with all the facilities a holidaymaker could wish for.
